Defense Legal Counsel Attorney

The Department of Public Health is seeking individuals with a commitment to public service and a desire to help protect the state of Illinois by serving as responsible legal counsel to agency for emergency preparedness and response issues.

This position is based in Springfield, Illinois in order to support state emergency response operations and offers an exciting opportunity to learn and participate in the growing field of emergency preparedness.

You will provide legal guidance to a variety of issues including public health emergency law, emergency medical services, and other related state and federal issues.  You will provide interpretation of federal and state statutes and the rules and regulations promulgated there under, and the application of court decisions and general legal principles to programs administered by the Department.

The candidate will have leadership responsibility and will work closely with other Offices and participate in providing training statewide.  The candidate will also work on a variety of other issues including performing legal review of legislation and in interpreting bills introduced into the General Assembly and in preparation of rules, regulations and standards required in implementation of statutes administered by the Department of Public Health. 

Experience:  3 years as a licensed Illinois attorney is required, candidates with less experience will not be considered. References and writing sample required.
